HONKER NATION — BUILT IN THE FIELD SINCE 1993

Honker Nation started back in 1993 as “Honker Headquarters” with three leases, 10 hunters, and one simple goal: Shoot Birds.

We didn’t have fancy trailers, custom pits, or a spread full of high-dollar decoys. We had a pile of old, beat-up decoys we proudly called the “Junkyard Spread.” We threw them in the back of a pickup, strapped a cargo net over the top, and headed for the field.

Calls? Maybe. When we did call, it was with an old flute call. We shot 10-gauge shotguns, had a three-bird limit, and hunted out of hand-dug pits with no covers. It was cold, dirty, simple—and it worked.

Then the geese got smarter.

So did we, because we had to, if we wanted success in the field.

Over the next 30-plus years, Honker Nation evolved with the birds. We learned, we adapted, we found better ground, we improved our spreads, and we figured out what it takes to consistently put geese on the ground.

Today, those original three leases have grown into more than 40 prime hunting locations across Northern Colorado, with 30-plus groups of hunters. And while Canada geese are still at the heart of Honker Nation, our hunters now chase ducks, doves, turkeys, and even the occasional deer.

The junkyard spread is long gone. Today, enclosed trailers haul high-end, lifelike decoys into the field. Flute calls have been replaced by $200 short reed calls. The old 10-gauges gave way to 3½-inch 12-gauges. Hand-dug holes became six-man professionally dug pits with custom covers.

Why all the gear and changes in methods?

Because the birds aren’t stupid.

They’ve seen all the spreads. They’ve heard all the calls. They’ve watched hunters make mistakes. And every season, they seem to get a little tougher to fool.

So, we work harder. We scout. We move. We adjust. We hide better. We build better decoy spreads. We call better. And when everything comes together and a flock locks up, drops their feet, and commits to the hole you know you are doing something right.

That’s why we do it.

Honker Nation wasn’t built overnight. It was built one lease, one pit, one spread, one flock, and one hunting season at a time.

More than 30 years later, the equipment may be better and the operation may be bigger, but the reason we climb out of bed before daylight hasn’t changed.

Good ground. Good friends. Cold mornings. Working birds.

And another chance to get it right.

What will the next 30 years bring?

Who knows.

But we’ll be in the field waiting.
